Because the app sends out a short chirp with different frequencies, it is insensitive to noise (the chirp is like a key, when the sound returns to the device, it compares the echo to the "key"). The probe works in 3 modes: continuous linear, cumulative and angular. The linear changes the image of the echo with each new chirp. Cumulative averages multiple scans for better accuracy.
